In an interview on CBC's As It Happens in January, Federal Minister of Public Safety Peter Van Loan agreed that Ashley's case was an example of the failure of the health care and justice systems. More recently, Van Loan was moved out of that portfolio when Harper shuffled his cabinet, making a federal inquiry less likely.
