Canwest Global owns the National Post, Montreal Gazette, Ottawa Citizen, Calgary Herald, Edmonton Journal and Vancouver Sun. The Irving Group owns almost every English-language newspaper in New Brunswick. Bell Globemedia owns the Globe and Mail and CTV.

What Do You Own?

Under Canada’s current media system, CEOs, managers, editors and journalists are accountable to their shareholders, to their advertisers, and to their corporate head offices. In this equation, the readers come last. In too many cases, accuracy and the ability to provide critical coverage is also compromised. We’re proposing a different model.

The Dominion is proud to announce the Dominion Media Solidarity Cooperative, Canada’s first multi-stakeholder media outlet jointly owned and democratically controlled by its readers, writers and editors. By becoming a member, you can participate directly in expanding and strengthening Canada’s independent media voice.

If media is going to be independent, it can’t be funded by corporate advertising. Using the coop model means that if enough people step forward to take ownership of their media, the cost doesn’t have to be high, and the benefits will be immeasurable.

Whether it's the Alberta tar sands or our role in Haiti, The Dominion has the guts to look at Canada without the fairytales about our national virtue that comfort and blind us. Our country is at a crucial turning point and we need the brave writers at The Dominion to tell us the truth about where we are heading. Truth telling shouldn't be such a radical act, but it always is. Only readers like you can keep this crucial voice alive and growing louder. Please, pitch in!

About the Dominion

The Dominion is a monthly paper published by an incipient network of independent journalists in Canada. It aims to provide accurate, critical coverage that is accountable to its readers and the subjects it tackles. Taking its name from Canada's official status as both a colony and a colonial force, the Dominion examines politics, culture and daily life with a view to understanding the exercise of power.
