In October, the Dominion will release and distribute its special issue on the Tar Sands of Alberta and Saskatchewan. We're looking for people who are interested in organizing events locally, all across Canada (and abroad).
Are people in your area affected by the Tar Sands? Do people want to know more about what is to be the biggest industrial project in human history and its impacts?
If you're even a little interested in helping organize something, post a note here, so that others can get in touch. Remember to include some contact information and note where you are located in the subject heading.
Update: All forthcoming events will be posted on the Tar Sands issue page. If you've planned an event that has not yet been posted, please send us the details.
The Dominion is a monthly paper published by an incipient network of independent journalists in Canada. It aims to provide accurate, critical coverage that is accountable to its readers and the subjects it tackles. Taking its name from Canada's official status as both a colony and a colonial force, the Dominion examines politics, culture and daily life with a view to understanding the exercise of power.
Coalition building
Hello from Montana. We are working on coalition building in area where they want to start shipping tar sands mining equipment through. If anyone would like to get involved in discussions send an email to northernrockiesrisingtide@gmail.com. Thanks and keep up the good work.
copies of the dominion
Hi there! In order to fundraise for the "return to the tar sands" SYC bike tour in august that i'll be participating in, I am hosting an info-session and community building event in late July. How would I go about getting 100 copies of the Dominion (sp. the tar sands issue) here in Hamilton?
Thanks for your help!
Aly
p.s. thank you for the awesome work you do!
Tar sands/global warming tour
Hi! It is great to have found this forum. We are organizing a three year tour for Heal Our Planet Earth's founder Anthony Marr (www.HOPE-CARE.org, www.MySpace.com/AnthonyMarr) dedicated halting mass extinction due to global warming. The most important facet of our project is the goal of shutting down the Alberta tar sands. Sounds like an ambitious project, but it needs to be done. The tour covers 30 states and provinces this year, Southern US year 2 and the world the following year. We are hosting a time capsule 2060 event in each state and province and are looking for hosts and contributors.
Tarsands Talk in Guelph, ON
Hi! I'm organizing a talk on Thu.Feb.7, "Tarsands Revealed or Everything You Can't Say in Alberta." We've got some really great speakers and I was wondering if I could purchase 150 copies of your special tarsands issue to hand out to the audience. Please get back to me asap. Thanks!

Niagara/St. Catharines Tar Sands discussion
I'm a grad student at Brock, currently living offcamous in Ottawa. I want to propose this as a topic for an event organized by students in my program, Social Justice and Equity Studies. There's been some good response from staff/faculty, but the students need some resources and help- copies of The Dominion, videos, help getting speakers. I want to be the initial contact on these things and hopefully inspire some of my Brock/Niagara peers to jump on board. Any suggestions? Is someone from The Dominion readin this and can reply re: resources, speakers? The event could be right away or part of the larger Niagara social Forum in April. Any help is welcome.

An Ottawa Discussion?
Ottawa should have at least one, or better, a series of discussions about this. Who can take the lead?
Ottawa discussion
...is planned. Details should be up soon.
PEI Social Forums
We organize monthly (sometimes bi-weekly) social forums, in Charlottetown, sponsored by the Institute for Bioregional Studies.
A discussion of how our area has been and is being affected by the Tar Sands project would be very timely.
You can reach us by email at: ibs_pei@yahoo.com
Thank you.

Tar Sands Discussion
A tar sands discussion is being planned in St. John's Newfoundland that will be co-hosted by the Newfoundland and Labrador Environment Network and The Learning Co-op. We're still deciding on a date/time/place, it will however take place sometime at the end of November.
If anyone is interested in helping organize or can speak as part of a panel about a particular aspect of the tar sands, please let us know!!
Will update with a location and time when we have it confirmed and booked!
The panel, both talks and
The panel, both talks and discussion, were excellent and attracted around 50 people, mostly youngsters. I took away your powerful little newspaper with its shocking messages.I found the analysis of cooptation of environmentalists via funding most persuasive. I hope to pick up more copies from the organizers if there are left overs and take them to an upcoming Party for mainly older environmental types. Newfoundland is closer to Alberta than the kilometres may suggest. Joan
I Live in Peace River Alberta
Peace River Alberta is one of the 3 main communities that will likely act as a hub in the planned tarsands development. It is located in Northern Alberta with a population of approx. 6500 residents. I'd love to host an information event as well as other things to get people to talk about these issues that are so central to this town's future and its people, not to mention Canada and the world. Anyone else live here who wants to help out in this endeavor?
re: I Live in Peace River Alberta
Hello tjames. Anthony Marr of Heal Our Planet Earth (www.HOPE-CARE.org, www.MySpace.com/AnthonyMarr) will be in Edmonton/Northern Alberta June 30th through July 4th (booked on the 2nd and 3rd). As mentioned in a previous post he is doing a three year world tour, a primary focus of which is to rally international legal and social pressure towards the aim of closing down the Alberta tar sands - tough job but someone has to do it. : ) Would you be interested in having him speak to a group in your town and/or would you be able to provide him with a place to stay? Resources in this project are being allocated where they will make the most difference and therefore lodging and the like is being organized on a grassroots level.

Tar Sands talk
We organize monthly speakers and sometimes films on relevant Canadian social issues.
We are in Lunenburg Co., N.S. and hold our monthly Cafe Canada sesions at the Mahone Bay Community Centre. These are sponsored by the Southshore Chapter of the Council of Canadians.
I'll suggest the Tar Sands topic for a future date at our monthly organizing meeting Mon. Sept 24th.
Let me know if there are any knowledgeable speakers near us.
Thanks
Frank
