The "Own Your Media" Tour: March 2008

THE DOMINION'S NATIONAL TOUR HAS BEEN COMPLETED. WE WANT TO SINCERELY THANK EVERYONE WHO HELPED OUT WITH ORGANIZING AN EVENT OR DISCUSSION IN THEIR COMMUNITY.

During the month of March, members of the Dominion's editorial staff will visit communities from coast to coast to speak about the importance of independent media. We will be meeting with supporters and readers to discuss The Dominion's five year plan, including the sustained financial support needed to do this work better and more often.

We offer our readers more than a chance to contribute to the growth of independent media in Canada. All sustainers and subscribers are part owners of The Dominion, a media co-operative dedicated to providing hard news coverage of the stories rarely reported by the mainstream media.

This is our chance to grow a grassroots support network for the paper. The tour's primary purpose is to promote the newspaper to those who can provide consistent, long-term funds towards a democratic and independent newspaper-- individuals who are tired of a media system that marginalizes, spins, and ignores stories of importance to the public.

We are seeking "table captains" for the 2008 spring tour.

How it works:

You and other supporters in your community each commit to getting 10 people to come to a public meeting.

We need:

  • A venue (community hall, university room, large living room, etc.)
  • A screen, a white wall, a sheet; anything we can use as a screen for our projector
  • An audience

We will:

Facilitate a discussion about what The Dominion can accomplish in the next few years, nationally and in your community. Our goal is long-term: to build sustainable, independent, democratic media that can challenge the corporate media's distortions and omissions.

The presentations are intended to raise funds for the Dominion's work, but everyone who attends should understand that no one will be expected or pressured to offer any contribution if they are not convinced of its worth. We welcome anyone who wants to come just to hear about the plan.

The Dominion is a monthly paper published by an incipient network of independent journalists in Canada. It aims to provide accurate, critical coverage that is accountable to its readers and the subjects it tackles. Taking its name from Canada's official status as both a colony and a colonial force, the Dominion examines politics, culture and daily life with a view to understanding the exercise of power.
