Vancouver goes Military before 2010

The Integrated Security Unit, which comprises the West Vancouver Police, Canadian Forces and RCMP, will make their presence known during their second training operation from February 9-13, one year before the 2010 Games. “The public are certainly going to see us," said Bud Mercer, assistant RCMP commissioner and head of the ISU.

Bob Mackin, one of Vancouver's best journos writing on the Olympics, recently broke the story about the "$44 million for six camps to accommodate 1,600 Canadian Forces personnel during the 2010 Winter Olympics."

A Canadian Tradition - State Force vs. Olympic protests NORM

How surprising. The Harper gov't slashes the $5 billion Kelowna Accord 2 or 3 years ago which would have allotted monies to indigenous peoples OVER THE YEARS, yet purports to spend these same billions on us via its website.

(So far) the gov't overspent from $1 billion to $5 billion on public relations for the Vancouver Olympic Games for 2010. Could this be in response to the protests organized against it?

The above figures for this article are no surprise. Canada has always had money (and the $13 billion dollar recent surplus) for OTHER areas, yet even when it came to the payouts for the Ndn residential school settlements, gov't officials still seen the need to scoop from the slated figures, and reassign them to Human Resources; albeit not for the benefit of indigenous peoples.

Each and EVERY TIME indigenous protests in Canada had arisen, gov't officials seen it fit to send in the state police and/or military. This is proof of widespread corruption and oppression which has resulted in the theft of indigenous lands; forbidden access to resources, as well as barriers to economic development; the latter of which the Attorney General of Canada had outlined in its 2003 Report to the House of Commons.

Perhaps this is why indigenous peoples are still at the bottom of the economic totem pole. Defiance and civil disobediance means state aggression and (some unheard of) shootings against protesters and/or imprisonment which would NEVER happen to Canadian citizens.
