Menchu, Molina or Montt?

Reuters ran a story yesterday about how Rigoberta Menchu is considering running for president in the next elections in Guatemala, scheduled for September 9, 2007. According to a Prensa Latina article, Encuentro por Guatemala is interested in her candidacy and will be meeting with her next week to discuss the possibility.

This comes as a bit of a surprise, as earlier in 2006, it was announced that she would not consider running until 2011. She is currently the "goodwill" ambassodor for the ultra-right Berger government.

School of the Americas graduate Gen. Otto Perez Molina, a former military commander in Quiché during the bloodiest years of the internal conflict, is running for presidency with the Partido Patriota.

General Efrain Rios Montt, the early 80s dictator currently facing charges of genocide, torture, terrorism and illegal detention in Spain, has announced that he will be running for congress.
