Lakota Sioux withdraw from treaty with US

Lakota Freedom: "We are the freedom loving Lakota from the Sioux Indian reservations of Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Montana who have suffered from cultural and physical genocide in the colonial apartheid system we have been forced to live under. We are in Washington DC to withdraw from the constitutionally mandated treaties to become a free and independent country. We are alerting the Family of Nations we have now reassumed our freedom and independence with the backing of Natural, International, and United States law."

I think it's hilarious that

I think it's hilarious that all you american "patriots" are crying foul because the Lakota have decided to do exactly what the declaration of independece says every people has the right to do - alter or abolish an unjust unrepresentative government. the fact is that the US & Canadian governments have never served the interests of native people's, and the seizure of native land violated both american law and international law from the beginning.

the Lakota are completely within their rights to withdraw from treaties and re-assert their independence. period. they're even being generous and offering Lakota citizenship to non-lakotas who live on their land, so you can hardly accuse them of anti-amercan bigotry. all they want is their own country back, and I for one am glad to see them standing up for themselves and taking back what belongs to them.

and, when the federal government refuses to acknowledge the legality of what they're doing and carries on as if nothing had happened, it will be just the latest in a long list of crimes. and I mean crimes literally because by refusing to recognize Lakota Independence the Federal government is violating its own constitution, specifically the clause that makes treaties "the supreme law of the land".

but then when has breaking the law ever mattered to the people in washington?

they have the legal and moral right to seceed

Withdraw from the treaties

Good Luck to the Lakota People. I hope it will work

Lakota Indians

This is a very good way of supporting the congressman Ron Paul theroy of returning to the constitution.

Maybe the Lakota are just fishing for money from the feds, or maybe the Lakota are serious, in any case the loss of a major part of five states and the possibility of other Indian tribes in America following suit will force the U.S. Government to use thier guns and tanks to make the indians "mind," but this will stop the "One World Government" that Bush and Clinton and many others want, at least in America.

Take care, big brother is watching you.

Means is NOT Lakota Leadership

Russel Means is NOT a Lakota leader, he is an actor, playing at being a terrorist. The Lakota Souix leaders are NOT supporting this tripe.
Those of us living in the Dakotas are a little tired of the press this is getting, since most of you are not bothering to print the whole story, or even find out who the hell Mr Means really is.
Talk to the Lakota Souix tribal leaders. Alex White Plume is the current tribal president.

Mr Means is an actor, and as such is always looking for a role to play. Too bad he's type casting himself as the militant fool.

Means is not Lakota Leadership

Well he is a hell of a lot better than the puppets set up by Canada and USA. They are basically a microcosm of South American dictators that the US sets up financially and militarily to destroy their own people. Chavez is slowly fixing that problem. Now we got to fix the problem in Cda and USA.

Good for Them!

I have no Indian blood in my veins but I'm a Southerner whose ancestors fought for independence from the United States. I support the Sioux 100% and wish them success. Their success will pave the way for Dixie to be free one day.

The thing that I wonder is,

The thing that I wonder is, are they willing to withdraw from the United States by force if necessary, and if so, would the United States respond militarily?

Withdrawal from the United States.

I believe that the answer to that question would be, yes, the U.S.would probably use force to prevent that withdrawal.

I think that all Indian Nations were badly abused in the forward march of this country, but I live in the here and now, not the past. Technically, a war was fought and the tribes lost. I'm not in any way, shape or form condoning what happened and continues to happen. I never felt Indians should be on reservations or forced to become like the "white man." If there's a solution to make both sides satisfied, I can't figure it out. I just don't agree that you now have the right to reclaim what those who went before you lost in battle. Again, I'll say I don't know what the answer is, but I know that things need to improve for you...as well as the rest of this country...and only by uniting can we have the power to accomplish anything.
I do have one parting question: If you did manage to separate and become your own nation, if the United States were ever attacked, what would you do?

Publicity stunt

Look, it's not really happening. It's just four angry Lakota activists making a lot of noise.

Lakota Sault

I wish the Lakota Sault much luck in their endeavor to break away from the United States and create their own country.
The United States has done so much damage to the Native American people of this country. Maybe this will be a wakeup call to Government of US of how powerful the Native People of this country can be. As the old saying goes, "make waves and maybe someone will listen".

Much love to all Native People of the US......

Trying to have their cake and eat it too

I certainly think that the massacre of Native Americans is one of the two greatest stains on the history of this country, along with slavery. I also believe the government bears some responsibility to help tribes maintain their culture and heritage. It is also tragic that so many suffer from addictions and poverty. That being said, I have a number of relatives from that area of the country (specifically the black hills), and from the many times I have been there I feel I can fairly say just about everyone there is poor, and a whole lot of the caucasian population struggles with addiction. Much of that area is a desolate, infertile, cold land that I would happily deed over to anyone willing to take it. But doing so will do nothing to solve the problems of the Native Americans. With no major economic draw, it's no wonder there is significant unemployment, alchoholism, and (perhaps as a result of these reasons and the cold) a high suicide rate. If real change is to occur, there must first be a change in the mindset of the youth. The leaders say they want to reclaim their culture, but they also want to improve the quality of life for the members of the tribe. The two goals are not entirely compatible. The "traditional" life is not exactly luxurious, safe, or likely to create any sort of substantial economy. Isolationism and finger pointing will only worsen the problem. Right now Native Americans at least have a choice to reject the modern world and live on a reservation, which will likely cause significant poverty, or to embrace the modern world, but leave the reservation. I'm not claiming the choices are always great, but at least they exist, which would be lost if they were to somehow succeed in this endeavor and no longer remain in the US.

What a joke like this could

What a joke like this could ever happen we are a country of
many people of deferent Races plus we have a REAL Democracy and rule of law Not only that but you will NEVER Find a Real Full blooded Native American most so called Native Americans have little to no real Genetic link to a US INDIAN TRIBE ------------

You have a coercive

You have a coercive multi-national state/empire, whether Canada or the USA. Neither is a "REAL Democracy" and neither follows "rule of law". Witness the flaunting of both constitutional and international laws by the current USA Precedent. Neither Canada nor the USA recognizes the right of self-determination. Neither recognizes the right of government by consent.
When proponents scream for 'One Law For All' what they are really saying is 'My Law for All', my way or the highway. That is the typical coercive way of 'nation-states'.
If you enjoy being a serf, living under domination of the Dominion, being bossed around in all facets of your life, so be it. But never confuse such tyranny with egalitarian democracy and freedom.
And as to the racist 'blood quantum' factor, human rights are human rights, not the private domain of a specific race.

This has publicity stunt

This has publicity stunt written all over it. The great nation of Bolovia will be their savior no doubt.

Great News!

I am so happy that someone has the BALLS to withdrawl and seperate themselves from the torment of these tyrrants! Good luck and peace to the real warriors on earth, and may all the Indian Nations follow the same.

It's about time

This has been a long time coming and it's way past due.

Cut 'em off, then.

I hope the US decides to cut off power, highway access, water, phone, cable, and the like from this "foreign country". I hope that jackass Russell Means moves from his Hollywood mansion to Wyoming to live in the squalor his actions (could) create. The Indians need to stop whining- you're only on your land as long as you can defend it. That's the way of the world. That's history. Get over it.

Lakota Independance

to: Cutt-em Off Then
They just might take you up on the defense of their land. Do you remember the Mohawk Crisis? You are a squatter and dont forget it, numbskull.
Guiding Moon

Phone, cable, and probably

Phone, cable, and probably water, access are supplied by private businesses, not the federal or state governments. Why would a business voluntarily cut off access to its customers? As for highway access, one can drive to Mexico and Canada, why not this new foreign nation?

your an idiot, cut the

your an idiot, cut the Lakota off, it's the other way around dumb ass.

I am part native as well and

I am part native as well and I have to say that I disagree with this. Yes technically it is legal, but kicking people out of there homes so you can re-claim the land is puting you on the same level as the people who began this all in 1851.
